    Mazurka

This piece is a homage to the great Spanish guitarist, Francisco Tarrega (1852-1909). Often called ‘The Chopin of the Guitar’, Tarrega wrote many pieces in the genre that Frederic Chopin (1810-1848) pioneered. The ‘Mazur’ is an indigenous dance to Chopin’s Fatherland of Poland and is in ¾ time with strategically placed accents on certain beats of the rhythmic meter. The Mazurka (the title given to solo instrumental versions of the dance) often features a first beat consisting of a dotted quaver followed by a semiquaver, evoking a sense of humorous and playful intention for performance. Crucial to the ‘spirit’ of the piece are the staccato articulations, marked on the score. Mark Houghton, May 2018.
